Overview

The MACD crossover strategy uses two types of crosses: (1) MACD line crossing the signal line—momentum shift; (2) MACD line crossing the zero line—trend direction change. Bullish: MACD crosses above signal or zero. Bearish: MACD crosses below. Combine with trend filter for stronger signals.

MACD crossover: signal line and zero line crosses

Signal Line Crossover

When MACD crosses above the signal line, momentum turns bullish. When it crosses below, momentum turns bearish. Use in trend direction: only take bullish crosses in uptrends, bearish in downtrends. Filter with moving average or structure.

Zero Line Crossover

MACD above zero = bullish momentum; below zero = bearish. Zero line cross can confirm trend change. Slower than signal line cross but often more reliable for swing trades.

Entry Rules

Enter on signal line cross in trend direction. Or enter when MACD crosses zero with price confirming (e.g. break of structure). Use histogram for confirmation: expanding histogram supports the move.

Common Mistakes

Trading every cross: filter by trend. Using MACD alone: combine with support/resistance. Ignoring timeframe: MACD works on 15M to daily; match settings to timeframe.
