Overview
Breakout trading enters when price breaks above resistance or below support. The idea: consolidation often precedes a strong move. Breakouts can be false (fakeouts), so confirmation is required. Volume (in forex, use tick volume or session activity) and candle close beyond the level help filter.
Identifying Levels
Draw horizontal support and resistance from recent swing highs and lows. Multiple touches strengthen a level. Ranges and consolidation zones are ideal breakout setups. Use pivot points for intraday levels.
Entry Rules
Wait for a candle to close beyond the level. Enter on breakout confirmation (e.g. pullback to broken level as support). Avoid entering on the first candle that touches the level—wait for close. Use ATR to set stop beyond the level.
Avoiding Fakeouts
Fakeouts occur when price briefly breaks then reverses. Reduce risk by: waiting for close beyond level, using a filter (e.g. ADX rising), or entering on retest. Place stop on the opposite side of the level.
Risk Management
Stop loss below support (for long) or above resistance (for short). Target: next level or 1:2 risk-reward minimum. Breakouts can be volatile—size accordingly.

FAQ
Common questions about this topic.
What is a fakeout in breakout trading?
When price briefly breaks a level then reverses. Traders get stopped out. Wait for confirmation to reduce fakeouts.
Should I enter on the breakout candle or wait?
Many traders wait for a candle close beyond the level. Entering on retest can reduce risk and improve entry.
What is the best timeframe for breakout trading?
4H and daily for swing breakouts. 15M–1H for intraday. Higher timeframes often have cleaner levels.
How do I set stop loss on a breakout?
Place stop below the broken support (for long) or above the broken resistance (for short). Use ATR for buffer.
